There is something wonderful about early morning. It’s easy to want to stay in bed where it’s warm and comfortable, but once you’re up, it’s nearly impossible to ignore everything good about early mornings. It’s quiet, no one else is about, and there are so many different things to appreciate. It’s why so many people have become or long to become a morning person.

Why You Want to Become a Morning Person

Before you learn how to become a better morning person, it’s imperative you understand what makes becoming a morning person worthwhile.

  • No one else is awake
  • Wake up motivated
  • Time to yourself before everyone else is up
  • Feel more productive
  • More time in the day

Morning people might check their phones for social media notifications and emails when they first rise, but they spend hours after that free of distraction. When the phone is not constantly ringing, pinging, and alerting you that someone is trying to reach you in the early morning hours, it’s easy to become more productive.

Create a Regular Bedtime

The best way to become a morning person is to establish a consistent bedtime. If you get adequate sleep each night, you’re going to find it’s much easier to rise early in the mornings. The average adult requires seven to eight hours of sleep each night to properly function, which means you should adjust your bedtime to allow for that. If you plan on getting up at 5 am each morning, make it a point to go to bed no later than 10 pm each night. The key is consistency. When you go to bed at the same time each night, you make it easier on your body to get up at the same time each morning. When you don’t stick to your bedtime routine, mornings become a challenge.

Create a Relaxing Morning Routine

Perhaps you want to wake up, shower, drink a cup of coffee, and then get ready for the day. Maybe you want to wake up, hit the gym, and then come home and get ready. Perhaps you like to enjoy breakfast on the porch each morning while watching the sunrise. It doesn’t matter what you do in the mornings as long as it’s something you enjoy. When you go to bed knowing you get to wake up and do something you enjoy, it makes getting out of bed much easier. For some, the enjoyment of early morning is nothing more than enjoying a quiet cup of coffee while the kids are still asleep.

Create a Gratitude Journal

Using a Gratitude Journal is an excellent way to transition into a morning person. When you wake up and spend a few moments writing down things for which you are grateful, you provide yourself a more upbeat start to the day. It can be as simple as being grateful for the quiet, being thankful you found a lipstick that doesn’t fade all day long, or even for cookie dough ice cream. Get as deep as you want, or be as simple as you want with this. It’s just a nice way to start the day on a positive note by forcing yourself to think of things that make you happy.

Plan a Reward

If you want to get motivated in the mornings to get things done and be productive, set a reward . If you can get all the laundry done or spend two hours in your home office working before the kids get up, you reward yourself with a glass of wine with dinner. If you get up early and get work done so well in the morning, you get to leave the office early on Fridays and do something enjoyable with your family.

It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you provide yourself incentive for waking up and getting things done in the mornings. Mornings are beautiful, and they’re underrated. No one wants to get up before the sun, but once you do, you learn to appreciate all the mornings have to offer considerably. They’re a superb time to get things done, to work with prime motivation, and to enjoy the slower pace.
