People are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of their day to day lives on the environment. A survey carried out in 2014 across the world found that over half of consumers were happy to pay more for goods and services from companies that have eco-friendly practices. By doing this, a business is not only doing their bit for the environment but increasing their bottom line as well.

It is important to remember that if you do advertise yourself as being an environmentally friendly business, it is essential that is. ‘Greenwashing’ (false claims of sustainability) your customers is worse than not claiming to be green in the first place.

1. Reduce the use of vehicles

Where possible, leave the car at home and walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work. It will not only be a huge step towards helping the environment but will increase your exercise and fitness levels and save money on fuel costs. When you are on the lookout for new business premises, make sure they are easily accessible to both customers and employees by foot or public transport, give them spaces to store helmets and cycling equipment in and somewhere secure to store their bikes. By doing this, you will hopefully encourage more employees to leave the cars at home, or at the very least, car share to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

2. Work From Home

For many workplaces, this is not possible, but thanks to new cloud technology, working remotely and from home is easier than ever. It saves you having to open up a building, paying out for the electric and gas, and reduces the amount of traffic out on the roads.

3. Reduce Water Usage

One of the most significant usages of water is from dripping taps and leaks, so make sure that these are fixed as soon as possible. Look into installing low-flow toilets and faucets in bathrooms and if you have an outdoor area that is watered by sprinklers, look at swapping out to a drip system. These reduce water wastage and usually have rain sensors, so are not used unnecessarily.

5. Reduce Single-Use Products

When you’re busy in the office, it can be tempting to have all the convenience items possible, from single cup coffee pods to plastic cups that are thrown away after one use. We now know that single-use plastic is one of the biggest issues facing the environment at the moment, but is also one of the easiest things to make a difference with. Purchase in some cheap, branded mugs and encourage the use of those, and install a water fountain with paper or reusable cups rather than plastic bottles.

Just a few simple changes can make a massive difference – especially if we all start implementing them.
